The Whitecap Dish

The Whitecap Dish

£45.00Price

Sculpted in soft white and ocean blue, inspired by waves breaking along the shore.

A one-of-a-kind ceramic serving piece shaped by the movement, texture and changing edges of the coastline.

Its softly folded outer form surrounds a raised central bowl, creating two distinct areas for serving and display. A creamy dolomite-white finish is edged with expressive manganese and cobalt blue, applied through a textured technique that recalls seafoam gathering along a breaking wave.

Both sculptural and practical, the piece may be used for dips and accompaniments, olives, nuts, sweets or small shared dishes. Away from the table, it also makes a beautiful home for jewellery, trinkets, soaps or a small candle in a suitable holder.

The irregular contours and richly textured blue detailing make this an entirely individual piece of functional ceramic art.

  • MATERIALS AND METHODS

This piece has been individually hand-built from ceramic clay, with the outer dish shaped into a flowing, irregular form before the raised central bowl was carefully constructed and joined.

Manganese cobalt oxide has been applied through a textured decorative technique, concentrating the blue colouring around the rims, folds and outer surfaces. A soft dolomite-white glaze was then applied before the piece was kiln-fired, allowing the white and blue finishes to interact and develop their naturally varied surface.

The glaze gathers differently across the raised textures, creating areas of deep cobalt, softer blue, white and gentle mottling that cannot be precisely repeated.

    Important handmade note and advisory

This piece has been formed, decorated and glazed entirely by hand. Variations in shape, rim height, colour, oxide movement, texture and glaze thickness are an intentional part of its character and the ceramic firing process.

The blue edging is deliberately organic and tactile. Small areas of unevenness, glaze pooling, speckling and visible surface texture are not faults, but qualities that make the piece entirely unique.

Due to its sculptural folds and raised edges, it should be handled with care and should not be stacked beneath heavier tableware. Colours may also appear slightly different depending on lighting and the screen on which they are viewed.

    Care

Food safe. Handwashing only is advised to preserve the textured glaze and handmade finish.

Wash gently using warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and sharp utensils that may mark the glazed surface.

Do not expose the piece to direct heat or sudden changes in temperature. Handle the raised and undulating edges carefully when carrying, washing or storing.

When used with a candle, place a small container candle or suitable candle holder within the piece rather than allowing a flame to burn directly against the ceramic.
